Avenue of the Americas Festival

NYC’s 6th Avenue is also known as Avenue of the Americas. The avenue was renamed Avenue of the Americas in 1945 by Mayor La Guardia to honor nations across the two continents .

To emphasize this Pan-American theme, the city installed a series of medallions along the avenue, each representing a country in the Western Hemisphere. I am deeply inspired by the unity and honor these medallions symbolize. Their installation aimed to create a visual and symbolic connection to the Pan-American mission of the avenue.

Over time, the medallions began to rust and were removed for safety concerns. However, at the end of 2023, the city's Department of Transportation completed a full restoration of the medallions.

Historic and renewed medallions

In celebration of these restored medallions, I have designed the Avenue of the Americas Festival. This event focuses on celebrating New York City's commitment to unity, honor, and resilience. It aims to bring the community together on the street, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared heritage.

During the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to get an "NYC Passport." Throughout 6th Avenue, there will be stations at each medallion where participants can receive a stamp representing each country. This event not only highlights the historical significance of the medallions but also encourages a sense of global unity and community spirit.
